Unfortunately, these heinous crimes do happen, and they happen more often than we think. So what is done to those who commit a hate crime? This is where the hate crime law takes effect. According to Criminal Justice in Action, by Larry K. Gaines, and Roger Leroy Miller, the hate crime law is, A statue that provides greater sanctions against those who commit crimes motivated by bias against an individual or a group based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender sexual orientation, disability or age. Hate crime laws do differ from state to state and unfortunately, in Utah, the hate crime law is practically useless. Several individuals who have committed hate crimes are not charged with hate crimes do to Utahs fruitless law towards these crimes. Several bills have been unsuccessful in changing these laws and some people who have committed such crimes have yet to receive any punishment. In the criminal justice system, the states find it unnecessary for cases to go to a federal level when the state itself can handle it at a state level. In Utah hate crimes are, like most others, handled at a state level. The Hate Crime Law in Utah only allows those with misdemeanor assaults to be charged with hate crimes. Those who commit a felony assault would, strangely enough, not be charged with a hate crime. For example, someone who chooses to target a home of a gay couple and tag their home in gay slurs could be charged with a hate crime. However, if that same person chose to target that same home and physically attack and injure the same sex couple, purely out of hate for their lifestyle, would not be charged with a hate crime. In a time where hate and intolerance for others seems to be at a high, it is upsetting that Utah has not allowed a bill to pass permitting a change in this law. In 2014 a gay couple out side of a bar in Salt Lake City, was approached and attacked by two other men who were yelling and calling these men by gay slurs. One man suffered severe head trauma, bruised ribs, neck strain and had several teeth knocked loose. When charges were formally filed, a warrant was put out for their arrest. Shamefully enough, to this day the arrest warrants for these men are outstanding, and they have yet to stand trial for these events. More recently, a story here in Utah has gone viral. On November 27th, 2018, a man by the name of Alan Dale Covington, age 50, entered a family owned tire shop and with a 5-foot metal pole he proceeded to beat 51-year-old Jose Lopez, and his son Luis, age 18. According to the sister and daughter of the victims who was a witness, says that Covington was shouting racial statements, such as I hate Mexicans and Im here to kill a Mexican. Luis was badly hurt, suffering a shattered cheekbone, as well as other facial injuries, requiring a metal plate to be installed. Luis father, Jose, received a deep cut on his arm and bruises on his back because he was shielding his son, who had been knocked to the ground, from the blows. Gill says, In Utah, we have a fade of saying we have a Hate Crime statue, but its impractical and unusable by prosecutors. There has not been a successful hate crime charge in Utah in 20 years. This is shocking, upsetting and disappointing. Gill says that this is not a loophole, but rather a void. For 25 years they have been begging for a remedy, but none had been given. Gills states that it is shameful that in 2018 the state has not been able to come up with a statutory remedy. In January of 2018, Sen, Daniel Thatcher of West Valley City, made an attempt to grant tougher punishments for those who target others because of their personal characteristics. Sadly, this last legislative session, the bill did not pass. A similar bill was dismissed in 2017 and another also of a similar nature lost traction in 2016. Not once, not twice, but three times a bill ha s been shot down for the changing of this law. Put aside the laws and regulations and think about this on a personal and emotional level. Put yourself in the shoes of those who are being targeted. It seems that many people anymore lack the ability to feel empathy for another. A couple, out for a fun night, was unexpectedly, violently attacked just for being who they are. A family, after Thanksgiving, is working in their family owned tire shop that they have worked hard for, are assaulted and injured because of the color of their skin. A father terrified for his sons safety, throws himself on top of him and willingly takes the blows so his beloved son does not have to. All while other family members stand by helpless and confused. All of these people targeted are, mothers, fathers, sisters, daughters, brothers, human beings. These people are victims of hate and bigotry because of their skin color, their culture, their religion, their lifestyle, their political views. They did not ask for this, and do not deserve it. When a hate c rime is committed it does not just affect the victim, but the race, community or culture that individual belongs too, and the community are affected by this hate. I believe that hate crimes will not change any time soon unless more attention is brought to the severity of the situation, and I stand is agreeance with George Pyle a publisher of an article by the Salt Lake Tribune, that maybe hate crimes need to be called what they truly are, and that is an act of terrorism.

It required me to be very critical of a certain webpage. Many people consider The Great Gatsby to be a must read for high school students. James Gatz, better known as Jay Gatsby, grew up in North Dakota, to Henry Gatz. Jay Gatsby is a hopeless romantic who held out his hope for Daisy for years, and through many struggles. Gatsby tried to return from war just to be with Daisy and he spent all the money he had trying to find her. This is what Nick meant when he said it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as i have never found in another person. (pg 2). This hope is what caused Gatsby to get rich by helping organized crime. This hope is what led him to New York, led him to buying a house, and incentivized him to throw extravagant parties. All in the hope of attracting Daisys attention. Gatsby eventually resorted to asking Nick for help to achieve. After all these years his hope was finally within reach. Only to be ripped away again by an unfortunate accident, and killed the next day. Gatsby is represented by green, black, brown, purple, and gold. He has a short temper, hes prone to violence, rather arrogant, a frequent liar, an alcoholic, a racist, and a cheater to boot. Tom is almost the exact representation of a corrupt aristocrat. His obscene wealth and horrible character traits making him one of the least ideal people to be around. However, Daisy was unlucky enough to marry him. Tom goes on to run around with other women, one of which being Myrtle. Whose nose gets broken in an argument with Tom. Everyone around Tom is likely to be hurt by him. I would assign purple and red. For his arrogance, wealth, and temper. Daisy Buchanan, wife to Tom, cousin to Nick, and an old acquaintance to Gatsby. Daisy doesnt care about anyone around her. She doesnt care for her daughter, having her raised by a nurse. She doesnt care for Tom, she even went and cheated on him. Nor does she care for Gatsby, she didnt even bother to send a flower to his funeral. There is the possibility that Tom prevented her from sending a flower. However I find this unlikely because she went so far as to cheat on Tom in the first place. If she cared enough she would have taken the risk to send flowers. I would give Daisy black for her evil ways. Jordan Baker is a friend of Daisys and eventual girlfriend of Nicks. Shes also a competitive golfer and independent woman. Representing the change in women that happened around the 1920s. Brought about by the ability to vote and find their own work. Jordan is also careless, reckless, and self-centered. She drives terribly but doesnt fear and accident because it takes two to make an accident. After the death of Gatsby and she talks to Nick again she appears to no longer care, claiming to be engaged to another man. I would give Jordan orange, for her fiery new woman spirit. Nick Carraway is the narrator of The Great Gatsby. He was a soldier in WWI, graduated from Yale, and them moved to New York to become a bond man. Nick tends to reserve his judgement until after everything is said and done. He describes himself as the most honest person he knows. Which seems quite true given the crowd he socializes with. Nick, like Gatsby, grew up in the West. Which is to say, an entirely different world than the East. Which is probably the source of his different values. He becomes friends with most of the other characters mentioned in the book. Nick also seems like he is the most saddened by Gatsbys death, other than Gatsbys father. I would assign blue to Nick, not only for the sadness he feels at the death of his friend, but also for the loyalty and wisdom he shows throughout the book. George Wilson is the owner of a gas station in an area known as the Valley of Ashes. He has stuck up a business deal with Tom. To buy Toms car and resell it for a profit. George became sick when he learned Myrtle cheated on him and devastated when he learned Myrtle was killed. Becoming a husk of a man he was days before. He became obsessed to the point of murder for the death of his wife, killing Gatsby because he believed he was the perpetrator. Unfortunately, he killed the wrong person in the end as Daisy was the one who was driving, not Gatsby. I would assign blue to George, for the crushing sadness he felt. Myrtle Wilson, Georges wife, and Toms mistress. She is a victim of Toms violence. Getting her nose broken just by saying Daisys name. She seems to be unable to stand being married to George, backed up by the quote Neither of them can stand the person theyre married to. (pg 33). Tom cant stand being married to Daisy and Myrtle cant stand being married to George. Myrtle was misled by Tom to believe that Daisy was a Catholic and therefore against divorce. Myrtle tried to flag down the car that hit her because she believed Tom was in it. So she likely spent her last few moments believing Tom had just killed her. Myrtle represents green and red to me. Green for the greed of yearning to marry Tom and red for the anger she felt towards Daisy. In the end, most of these characters suffered at the hands of the others. This can be due to their harmful and dishonest nature. Or to the unfriendly society of the upper class. Or any other culmination of the negative aspects of society associated with the upper class. What may just be the worst part of this tragedy is that it is entirely avoidable. If they were only more honest or less old fashioned more characters would probably have ended up happy.
